Parents drinking outside schools
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/south_yorkshire/8288396.stm
Parents in Barnsley have been criticised by police for drinking alcohol when dropping off and collecting their children from school.
Complaints have been made about drinking in the street around Doncaster Road primary school in the town.
Councillors and police are to meet to discuss banning drinking alcohol in the streets around the school.
If the ban is implemented police will have the power to confiscate alcohol and drinkers could face a £500 fine.
'Not acceptable'
Det Insp Mark Spooner, of Barnsley's Central Safer Neighbourhood Team, said they had been getting reports of drinking in the streets around the school and also of parents drinking whilst waiting to pick up their children.
He said: "In my view that's clearly not acceptable. It's not acceptable in a modern society and we will put a stop to it."
Safer Neighbourhood Teams consist of police, community support officers, impact wardens and neighbourhood wardens. They work within communities to deal with local problems such as street drinking.
Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council will meet to discuss the proposed ban on 7 October.
Unbelieveable.
So would you enjoy a can of Special Brew whilst dropping the children off at school?

Re: Parents drinking outside schools
Its disgusting what an example to show your children. No wonder the country is in such a state.
OP they have done this no drinking zone in a small village here in Telford but to be honest it hasn't made that much difference people still walk about drinking cans and bottles of alcohol. It as been in force since the beginning of last month. It cannot easily be policed so I don't think it will work they are not concerned about fines the chances of them being caught is minimal.
I posted in another thread that we have drinkers hanging around the shops here we have to run the guantlet to get to the local shops, these are parents young and old and their children are running riot in the small shopping center while they are sat outside drinking. absolute disgrace.and the police dont seem to care, at the end of the day the police know who they are and where they are and as long as they behave thats ok.

Re: Parents drinking outside schools
Its not OK though is it. If people are intimidating others, it should be stopped.
What the hell do the police actually do, nowadays? Have they simply stopped 'policing'?
How many peoples lives are being ruined at worse, hampered at best, by unsocial idiots, that care not a jot for other people.
Its only when a case is highlighted in the papers, (usually because a tragedy has happened), that the police ever actually make an appearance. And recently, thats been to apologise for being useless.

Hi Syl your right. I know for a fact that the police couldnt care less about these people that drink here, my daughter complained about feeling intimidated everytime she had to walk past them. The police officer said there was nothing he could do they were not causing a problem... Hello ....people feeling intimidated when going to get a bottle of milk people accosted for money is not a problem, these are not children or teenagers they are adults.
On another note Thursday there was something on the morning tv where a headteacher had banned parents swearing whilst in the playground taking or collecting their children from school.

June,
People eff and blind now, and they dont even realise they're doing it.
Matters nothing if their kids are with them. Its just one more way society is going down the tubes.
I dont go along with the argument,'they are just words' its more than that.
I swear sometimes. But NEVER in front of my Mum, my Son or any children. i never swear AT people either.
In my book its called respect.

Well it is regardless of what one sees.
Didn't they feed chips to children through the school gates in South Yorkshire recently?

Yes, and I thought those women were idiots.
They had pads and pens, and was writing down the orders for the kids chip shop dinners. Whether you like Jamie Oliver or not, I think his ideas re school dinners were good.
Loads of kids dont get fed properly at home. Perhaps a decent school dinner is the only nourishing food they ever have.
(But not when those ridiculous women were around.)

I have to agree Syl it is the only time some children get a good nourishing meal. If the parents didn't want their children to have the healthy options why didn't they have them home for dinner, they took the time to go to the school and get orders off their children they should have took them home imo.
