Joshua!!!!!!!!!!!
Riddle me this Joshua:
Cos you are the only one who likes numbers as much as I do!!
Apart from Lilypad, possibly. Oh and Dreamtwister.
Now,
If a certain function of zero is zero
and the function of one is one
and the function of two is two
then the function of 5 should be 5, shouldn't it??
So how come the function of 5 is 120???
and the function of 6 is 720
An inspired guess, no less is called for here!
You have until tomorrow to think
about it and come up with the answer.

Re: Joshua!!!!!!!!!!!
you're just jealous cos you know squat about maths!
the answer is perfectly straightforward.
and there will be a few more juicy maths puzzles in the next few
days, after someone solves that one!!

factorial function - !
1! = 1
2! = 2
5! =120
6! =720
7! = 5040

i am not worthy
apart from anything else you obviously have good "number recognition". cos there are a heck of a lot of functions out there but you knew the precise function i was referring to!
forgot to mention, vili has a maths brain too, and old punk likes to dabble a bit. i miss all my other maths boys. i truly do! come back boys!!!!!!!!!!

I'm here Canny, don't forget ME! If numbers get you so very excited I can whisper some in your ears if you like.CannyX wrote:bang on josh!!!!Joshua wrote:CannyX wrote:Riddle me this Joshua:

Re: Joshua!!!!!!!!!!!
you can whisper sweet nothings to me rocks!!
nothing (ie zero) counts as a number, right?
or we can do sums: what's 78 minus 9???? oh, never mind!
__________________________________________________________
now then, one last puzzle, i think this is lilypad's territory:
why is zero to the power of zero equals one, and why is half to the power of minus three equal eight???????? (there is a simple and logical explanation why!).
step up to the plate lilypad!

Re: Joshua!!!!!!!!!!!
If multiplication means to make more, how come half x half = one quarter.

Re: Joshua!!!!!!!!!!!
and that's not all!!
moreover, you sometimes INCREASE a number when you divide it. for example, if you divide any quantity by a quarter you actually quadruple the original number!! 8 divided by a quarter is 32!!
that's the beauty of maths, maverick, it has a language and code all of it's own. we are like a little club who speak in coded language completely unintelligible to innumerate folk!!
most ppl know the basics -eg squares,square roots, cubes, etc but if you take things up a notch and start waffling on about, say, differentiation or integration, they're lost, and they lose interest.
pity.

I'm one of the inumerate but ...if it has a pound dollar or euro sign and it's effecting my pocket ...I do remarkably well.

It will only increase - but not defintely - if one of the numbers is more than one.
1x 1 = 1
2 2 4

Maybe because they haven't either been told about them or they haven't been given the progressive link between the two.

Re: Joshua!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the big problems with maths is that pupils aren't necessarily having to learn maths; they were just learning how to pass exams. Whereas with the functional element, they have to understand what's going on to be able to apply it. Before, it was too easy to teach maths to get good marks, but you could be getting an A-grade student who doesn't really understand all the maths behind it.
It's like owning a car and learning how to drive just to pass the test, but does every driver know how the engine actually functions?

Re: Joshua!!!!!!!!!!!
Why is the number 9 unique?
If you multiply number 9, or any combination of 9 by any other number the answer will always add up to nine. Likewise, if you multiply any other number by 9, or any combination of 9 the answer will also add up to 9.
Examples:
2x9=18....1+8=9
5x9=45... 4+5=9
13x9 =117...1+1+7=9
6x9=54...5+4=9
I always find this amazing because the answer never fails to add up to 9.
27x27=729...7+2+9= 18...1+8=9.

Re: Joshua!!!!!!!!!!!
yes, the number 9 is utterly fascinating and i have often waxed lyrical about its magical powers, don't know about "unique" though, cos the number 3 is incredibly similar in it's magical qualities, believe it or not.Maverick wrote:Why is the number 9 unique?

and i have plenty to say about number 11 too, but it will all keep for another day, cos i wanna visit jack's forum before i get tired and switch off the PC.
i like all the guys in this thread, my favourites! well hello boys!!!!!!!!!!!!!! xxx
