Villipend,or Vilipend? That is the question.
Will the real Vilipend stand up please?
He's been Vilipend since he was knee high to a grasshopper but a strange thing has happened, he came on Angry Monkey as ViLLipend. Two Ls instead of the traditional one L.
Is he losing the plot or has he just realised after all this time that he has been spelling his own name wrong?
Oh Dear!

Re: Villipend,or Vilipend? That is the question.
seriously though, it's like this: when a name is affectionately changed to the 'familiar' form (the form that ends in i,ie, or y,) the last consonant is usually duplicated. (BTW the same applies to ordinary words, more about that another day, cos the structure of the english language is very exciting)!!Maverick wrote:Will the real Vilipend stand up please?

hence:
thomas = toMMie
jonathan = joNNy
chronos = chroNNy
beth =beTTy
margaret = maGGie
thus vilipend becomes viLLi.
there! happy to help!
TBH he does not make too much of a fuss whichever way ppl spell it, and he is
always too much of a gentleman to correct my french spelling and grammar.
je te souhaite des bonnes vaccances notre vilis. xx
Re: Villipend,or Vilipend? That is the question.
mavvy, have you also noticed that duplication of the last consonant always softens the preceeding vowel?? you switch to the softer pronunciation of the vowel. (apart from one or 2 exceptions, which is the beauty of the language, the exceptions!)
hence:
filing/filling
siting/sitting
coping/copping
caning/canning
riding/ridding
tiling/tilling
moped/mopped
piped/pipped
fated/fatted
cuter/cutter
etc
etc
