THE MOST DANGEROUS PROFESSION?
I feel that soldiers, miners and deep-sea divers are most at risk of death during the course of duty. The emergency services also do a dangerous job. Bouncers and secondary school teachers are permanently at risk of being attacked too.
But top of my list is: Bomb disposal expert. They have the most dangerous job imo. British bomb disposal experts, like all british troops, are trained to a very high professional standard, so not much goes wrong, but when it does, death is surely inevitable....and swift!!!!!
Second on my list (on a world-wide scale) is mining.
Worst mining accidents:
439 deaths at the Senghenydd Colliery Disaster at Universal Colliery in Senghenydd, Glamorgan in a gas explosion in 1913
290 deaths at the Albion Colliery in Cilfynydd, Glamorgan in a gas explosion on 25 June 1894
266 lives lost in the Gresford Disaster near Wrexham in North Wales on 22 September 1934
259 deaths at the Prince of Wales Mine, Abercarn, Monmouthshire in an explosion on 11 September 1878.
Australian, Chineseand South African miners often perish too.
Who agrees/disagrees?

Re: THE MOST DANGEROUS PROFESSION?
markey is right again. IME, (and I have plenty), bouncers are either looking for trouble, picking up women, or if its a quiet night, getting p*****.

Re: THE MOST DANGEROUS PROFESSION?
I've never really appreciated how much soilders put themselves at risk, until I had two cousins go into combat. Obviously I knew it was a dangerous job, but with them out in Afghanistan, I pay a lot more attention to whats happening with the Army now.

Re: THE MOST DANGEROUS PROFESSION?
Especially lately. More young soldiers have been killed in the last couple of weeks,in Afghanistan, than ever before. (on average)
My Grandad was a miner, from a family of miners.
There were some horrendous accidents, in those days.
Not many miners left now though.
I do believe some of the pits will be opened up again though, in the not so distant future.
Lets hope the conditions will be improved greatly, if they are.

Re: THE MOST DANGEROUS PROFESSION?
i'm sure ppl wanting to join the army now think twice before they do it. who can blame them??
i am a bit confused tho, some soldiers who frefuse to go to afghanistan are jailed. i thought any squaddie could be a 'conscientious objector' if he wanted...

yes, you get spates of fisherman deaths, then spates of firemen deaths, it comes in waves.markeymark wrote:i would of thought fishermen would be high on the list for most dangerous job or firemen
OMG: prostitutes!! how could i forget to include them. very dangerous job!! one prossie on TV said she automatically feels under the seats for a crowbar, etc as soon as she enters a client's car!
Re: THE MOST DANGEROUS PROFESSION?
Fishermen apparently come out top ( think of that next time you have fish`n`chips ) (Bomb Disposal Second) Delivery Drivers and Farmers are way up there as well ( the spuds for the chips) Building/Construction Industry Workers, when you next see a "Builders Bum" think what a dangerous job he`s doing.

I might be wrong, but I think building and construction accounts for the most casualties, even if not the highest risk

Probably down to sheer numbers of construction workers. A painter on a site I was on died a few years back, fell down an open lift shaft. His son saw it happen too!!

Re: THE MOST DANGEROUS PROFESSION?
I found it. His son was on site at the time, but didn't actually see the accident, my mistake...
John, a decorator, died after falling 45 feet down a lift shaft at Walsgrave Hospital.
John was an experienced industrial painter who had been self-employed for over a decade when he won a contract to work at the hospital's new site, off Clifford Bridge Road, Coventry, and had been doing the job for several weeks before the fatal incident.
An inquest took place at Coventry Coroner's Court on 1 December 2004 when a verdict of 'Accidental Death' was returned.
Coroner David Sarginson presided at the inquest at Coventry Magistrates Court and heard that John probably fell from the third floor, and died instantly. John had been working on the shaft with his son Nick, and was spray-painting walls before the lift gear was installed.
Det Sgt Martin Lawrence inspected the site, operated by construction firm Skanska, along with Alex Nayar from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Nick Broome, who was working elsewhere when the accident happened, said, 'My father usually used a harness, but there were no eye-bolts to attach it to. He was always careful - I'd only ever once seen him work without one.'
Mark O'Dowd, safety adviser at the site, said painting lifts was always a two-man job, and workers were not supposed to be in the empty shaft, but behind a 3ft gate.

Re: THE MOST DANGEROUS PROFESSION?
another dangerous job: off-shore drilling by oil-rig workers.
there have been many deaths in scotland over the years. death is usually due to helicopter mishaps after work, not the job itself. so sad.

Re: THE MOST DANGEROUS PROFESSION?
There was some programme channel 4 I think
Called Jobs for the girls or similar.
They took five highly professional women and got them to do the five most dangerous jobs, in the world
If I remember correctly tree felling was the most dangerous.

Re: THE MOST DANGEROUS PROFESSION?
yep, i was right. mining is the most dangerous profession. especially in china (and south africa too) official reports say that at least 3,200 miners perished in china last year. ("at least"???? don't they know the true figures? ). the deaths are through explosions. workers burn to death.
2 days ago a dozen perished in china's shanxi province, some are still missing.
and in february 74 perished. many more injured and may become disabled.
http://www.modernghana.com/news2/203550/1/74-miners-die-114-injured-in-china-mine-blast.html
all deaths are sad but i have always found deaths whilst trying to earn a living particulary poignant and tragic.

778 over 200 years.
I take your point Canny
but doesn't that make it one of the safest professions?
