Pierre Lelouche: "Your policy is pathetic and autistic. The conservatives have taken a pathetic stance that will castrate British influence in Europe"
(emotional outburst by the french EU minister in response to David Cameron's pledge that he will "lock in" the sovereignty of british laws, and that all future treaties will be put to the public vote.)

Re: QUOTE OF THE DAY.
they're Latins! they have in-built insubordination in their genes! not like us anglosaxons with our hypnotic sheep-like obedience.
besides, remember that their words are differently nuanced. for example, we ask, they demand. to us demand is rather forceful and impolite, but not to them!
anyway, this lock-in that cameron is wittering on about, it's a bit like getting a fancy burglar alarm after the family silver has already been stolen, someone said on the news today. he has already reneged on the initial pledge, now he is making more pledges.

Re: QUOTE OF THE DAY.
cameron's excuse is that his referendum campaign is now over (it never started imo!!)cos the lisbon treaty is no longer a treaty, he said, it has now been incorporated into EU law, it's been ratified. so it's too late to take a vote on it. but cameron added that in future no further powers would be handed to brussels without a referendum. he said that a sovereignty clause would make it explicit that britain's parlaiment cannot be overruled by the EU.Joshua wrote:hmmm yes - cameron's promising a referendum on europe - just after he's reneged on a promise to have a referendum on europe ...........
cameron's statement was immediately attacked by 2 MP's:
# by libdem foreign affairs spokesman edward davey, who said that the announcement was confusing, and that "cameron had already done enough to alienate britain's allies across europe by leading his party into the lunatic wilderness, now he wants to take britain there too".
# by labour foreign secreatry david milliband who said "the british ppl know exactly what to expect when they hear a cast iron guarantee from cameron on europe: nothing!"
ouch

Canny, our "sheeplike" obedience won us two world wars, defeated the French at Trafalgar..defeated the Spanish Armada and won back the Falklands against all the odds. Not to mention Oliver Cromwell...well, we won't go into his victories as it might upset the Scots and the Irish.

fair point, alas it also makes us stand dopily in queues whilst foreigners barge past us, and it makes us swallow rank food in restaurants without complaining...Maverick wrote:CannyX wrote:they're Latins! they have in-built insubordination in their genes! not like us anglosaxons with our hypnotic sheep-like obedience.

Chefs don't mind anyone wining and dining but they hate customers who whine and dine.

Re: QUOTE OF THE DAY.

in fact if the human species wasn't here pumping noxious gasses into the atmosphere all day long, it would be better for the planet!!
i can easily envisage situations in which mankind is destroyed (such as sudden warming of the planet to unbearable levels), but i cannot envisage situations where the planet itself is destroyed.
What about when the sun has exhausted its fuel in about 5 billion years time Cans, cos then it will become a lifeless husk imo.
According to the scientists this planet is good for at least another 60 billion years, and according to Darwin's theory, mankind will adapt to any dramatic change in our planet.
That's what evolution is all about. Things don't happen overnight so any change will be gradual and humans will gradually adapt to that change, whether it be a hot climate or a cold one we will survive, so will many animals and birds.
Those that can't adapt will perish and become extinct. It's called the survival of the fittest, or natural selection.
In a thousand years from today the human race will either be walking around in bathing costumes to keep cool, or a fur coat, fur gloves and a hat to keep warm, depending on what road climate change takes us down.
If we have to suffer another ice age just make sure you have plenty of whiskey to go with it.

Re: QUOTE OF THE DAY.
Yes, God IS the greatest comedian. He loves a laugh, and he laughs loudest when we start making plans.

Re: QUOTE OF THE DAY.
cos the surprises he has in store for us are always very different from the plans we make originally. there is a saying that if you want god to laugh, start making plans...Rockmaninov wrote:Yes, God IS the greatest comedian. He loves a laugh, and he laughs loudest when he sees us making plans.
